Nail Art 1 Part Two: 5-petal Flower

Last week’s lesson was taught by Teacher Nicole and Teacher Joe! We had to practice the 5-petal flower on a piece of paper first, with acrylic paint! Each petal must be at 72 degrees apart, which adds up to a full 360 degrees for a even flower! My eyes were slightly crossed after practicing on paper.

My first two attempts on the nail tips above! Picture below shows the teacher’s work, look at the petals! So accurate and they look so similar!

Photobucket

And then we were taught how to do a three-tone 5 petal flower; just by mixing a lighter and darker colours for the contrast! Notice how teacher’s petals are slightly smaller so I made mine smaller this time as well!

I like how mine looks! I doubt I can ever master this perfectly because  I think no one wants to do this kind of art on their nails! But, this is a good practice! As what Teacher Joe says, if you can copy/paint 5 exact petals; you can copy/paint just about anything! Excellent quote!

And this sums up the completion of NA1!!! Yay, I’m moving on to acrylic extensions next and then back to NA2!

My New Setup!

If you guys have been following me on instagram (@mentalforpolish), you would have known that I’ve got a wall shelf rack 3 weeks ago to house my manicure/pedicure babies! I got this from IKEA for about $65 if I remembered correctly. Dad and boyfriend helped me set it up and its awesome! I think I might need to get another nail polish rack to display my soft gel collection since the rack is already full! (been keeping the extras in my Helmer!) I have a total of 78 colors now for services! :D

I like how my room looks now, very girly and neater than before!

Photobucket

Haha I know my customers who came to me before I did my revamping might notice a big difference in my room’s layout! :)

I’ve also added an aromatherapy corner so that my room would not smell like a toxic area lol

New Nail Wheel!

Was off from work last Friday and spent my entire afternoon resting by doing up new nail designs! Most of them are replicated from Nail Up! and Nail Max issues, with the exception of the zebra tip design from Robin Moses, the Paris/Eiffel Tower are from Ying and some are my own creations!

P.S. I apologise for the bad quality photos, didn’t have my camera with me so I used my iPhone 4 under bad lighting :(

Types of Customers

Since I’ve been offering my services at my home-based salon for 6 months now; I’ve decided to come clean about some customers’ actions that simply puts me off. Apart from those categories of customers listed by Ying; I’ve came across obnoxious people who fits all the categories mentioned below and in Ying’s post.

1. Ignorant customer Fails to read details of the pricing of my services and also my availability and chose a suitable time slot for herself (e.g. Stated clearly that I am only available from 10am to 5pm but yet she asked for my availability at 9am)

2. Never-ending questioner Asks me about availability on a particular date when I am not free. And then asks again the next week; and the following week! Kindly check my blog for slots first then contact me for availability, I simply do not have the time to reply to interested parties about my available slots.

3. Irresponsible customer Cancelled her appointment an hour before her scheduled time slot. Now now now… where’s your courtesy?! I woke up early for your appointment and yet you casually cancelled it in an SMS. So to rectify this problem, all customers (except my regulars) will be prompted to pay a $10 deposit to confirm your slots. No deposit, no confirmation; as simple as that.

4. Inefficient/Selfish customer Asks you about availability and pricing and when you revert back to her immediately, she stops replying and then starts to ask you about the same thing again the following week. I reply to smses almost immediately; if not under 3 hours so I don’t see why I have to wait and wait and wait for customers to confirm their slots when others are probably interested in your slot too. I do send multiple SMS to customers (if there isn’t any replies) if I do not get a confirmation and sometimes I don’t even get a reply until a few days later. (Seriously? You don’t check your phone for days??)

I’m sorry that this post is filled with so much angst but I think I deserve to rant. I’ve met 2 customers who complied to 3/4 of the bad habits I’ve listed and that’s so horrible! Customers should also have some respect to us by complying to our terms and conditions so as to make the service much more enjoyable! (E.g. I’ll be happy that you arrive on time and end on time etc) No doubt that I am just operating a home-salon, but every customer means alot to me as one cancelled appointment means a substantial loss of income.

So therefore, I urge all new customers to kindly read through my terms and conditions, my availability of slots and my service menu before contacting me for any queries or bookings of slots, thank you :)

Also; a shoutout to my regulars: THANK YOU so much for your continuous support to Mental For Polish; I will be having a promo just for you in May/June so stay tuned! :D

Mind-boggling Lessons

Now that official teaching lessons are over, the lessons from now on would be practicing, practicing and more practicing to prepare for our mock pedi and manicure exam!!

Photobucket

I managed to finish both manicure and pedicure within the time limit of 50 minutes and 60 minutes respectively, hurray!!! Also, finally I am able to grasp the technique of doing a nice French manicure with the help of Teacher Nicole! Well, I’m not there yet but I’m still trying!

Again, my partner; Ruby’s hands and feet are featured ^^

I always look forward to class every week because there’s something new to learn! This week’s lesson will be SPA manicure and pedicure lesson! I’m excited~~

Practice, Practice and Practice!

I had my first pedi class last Saturday and my partner was Ruby! :) Hahaha excuse my meaty legs >;( We were tasked to do the entire pedicure process on one foot in 35 minutes! Quite a challenge and none of us could finish on time! Sigh… mock pedi is in about a month’s time, yikes!!

Photobucket

I wouldn’t be able to attend next week’s class so I had a makeup class this week with Serene! Lol we were ‘lost’ for awhile because we haven’t attend this week’s class yet so we had no idea we had to polish our own nails red first before starting! We had to do the entire manicure process this time round with 2 simple nail art in 50 minutes! I almost finished on time… was left with another coat of french tip and the nail art D: guess I have to speed up more!

Photobucket

Finished product: Serene’s hands! Still need lots of improvement on the French! Nicole says the red is good ^^ yay!!!!

Cuticle Care, Massaging and Polishing!

Photobucket

I was 30 mins early for class last week so I set up my table really slowly.. Recently I bought more new towels in the same colour, more organisation stuff and did the labels of all the tools and products used, yay!

Learnt about cuticle care and massaging techniques today and it was so enjoyable!!! Had so much laughter with my classmates; I really like them alot! :)

Photobucket

I partnered Ruby for the entire lesson and we started on cuticle trimming on ourselves first before proceeding to do our partners! Afterwards, we learnt the massaging techniques and steps for both hands and feet! I think the massaging part was the best… because all of us get to relax for awhile!

Photobucket

And then it was back to polishing again! Had to polish 3 fingers red and 2 fingers French. I suck at French for nail polish since it dries up much quickly then gel polishes! Need more practice!!! Also… Teacher Nicole was emphasizing on our homework again! I think I better start filing soon lol! (wanted to do them last night but forgot that I left my box of clear tips in school -.-)

It’s gonna be pedi class tomorrow :)

Photobucket

All products are in the pink course kit as shown, including all course notes etc! I am only disappointed that I didn’t get a pink manicure bowl… lol; almost everyone else had it in pink while I had a boring transparent one which I do own it at home :( We were given these products (items 13 to 16 only to diploma students):

My course notes!

We had 6 hours of theory and we had to do a big amount of copying! I am very intrigued by the theory lessons we had, I had no idea the nail structure was so complex. We also learnt alot on hygiene, such as the differences between santization and sterilization and the steps we have to do in a manicure process and also massaging techniques. I also realised I’ve been mistaking oval shaped nails as round… Opps! Teacher Rachel; who is also the principal of the school, also started giving hints for the exams. Lol, that kinda stressed my class abit I guess since we weren’t expecting the word ‘exams’ during the first lesson. My class had about 14 students; I’m not so sure about the exact number since quite a few came for makeup class! But we do have a good mix of different ages and nationalities!

Besides the products we were given in the course kit; we had to buy more products needed for next week’s class (e.g. red, white and pink polishes, barbicide etc) I’ve totally forgotten about the $100 product voucher until the end of the class so I used up the vouchers to get more necessities. Reason being is that I want to get a new set of tools for school use so as to not get mixed up with my current ones. I’m also thinking of renting a locker because it’s tedious bringing a basket of stuff over to school and then for self-study sessions! T-T

Here’s what I’ve got for the $100 product vouchers (products are sold to us in retail price because we used vouchers for the mode of payment instead of cash) :

- Pink, white and red polish (I am surprised at the consistency of these polishes!!!! The bottles are the exact shape of Elainto’s premium polishes, very corset-looking?)
- Full set of clear tips
- Angel.Pro buffer
- Angel.Pro files x2
- Plastic backing paper towel
- Hand sanitizer
- Alcohol
- Barbicide
- Solvent

I tried on my apron just now and I couldn’t stop laughing. It was ridiculously long so I think I shall get it altered so that I don’t look that short, lol! I cannot wait for next week’s lesson! We will start on filing and polishing techniques so stay tuned for my update on my nail lessons every week :)
